Enders star killed off in crash for joining ITV

Eastenders bad boy Steve Owen is to be sensationally killed off in a high speed car smash -- as the BBC takes revenge on actor Martin Kemp for defecting to ITV.  Viewers will see Steve die in a car chase which starts after he kidnaps Phil Mitchell's baby daughter Louise.

Steve ends up tearing across London with his old rival Phil in hot pursuit. He loses control of his car, which flips on to its roof and bursts into flames.  Phil manages to pluck his daughter to safety -- and leaves his enemy to burn to death.

Steve's dramatic end will be screened in March. It was devised by EastEnders bosses furious to discover that actor Martin had struck a £1.5million ITV deal.  The former Spandau Ballet guitarist told them about his move just an hour before ITV released a statement.  The 40-year-old -- who has won a string of "Best Actor" awards for his role -- was due to continue working on EastEnders until April, when his contract runs out.  But angry bosses decided to write him out early -- leaving no chance of him ever coming back.

An EastEnders insider said: "They were furious at the way Martin handled the whole thing. Out of courtesy they would normally expect an actor to give them some warning so that they have time to come up with a better offer. It comes as no surprise his character has been killed off. It means that if it all goes wrong for Martin at ITV he can never go back."

Martin's character Owen has been in some of the most dramatic storylines since arriving on EastEnders in 1998.  He Killed ex-love Saskia and earlier this year tried to Frame Dan Sullivan for Phil's shooting.
